Volunteering
We are always seeking to increase the numbers of volunteers we have to support people with low vision around the county. This is not an onerous commitment - we say spare an hour to share an hour
.
There are various areas where we need help. Firstly, with our volunteers who visit visually impaired people in their homes to provide good company and carry out small practical tasks. We need people in all areas of the county. There is also a need to support those who have a dual sensory loss of hearing and sight.
We are also seeking volunteers in the eye clinics to offer support and information to people with low sight, often at a time when the patients are feeling most vulnerable.
A further area of need is with taking out equipment into the community, which involves the setting up and demonstration of equipment at exhibitions, information points, care homes, day centres, groups and social clubs for visually impaired people.
Further information about these service areas can be found on the What We Do page.
If the above does not sound quite right for you, you may like the idea of helping with our fundraising activities, such as helping with collections etc.
All of our volunteers undergo training in sight awareness and all are encouraged to take further training in hearing impairment awareness so that the needs of deaf/blind people can also be served. Volunteers also receive ongoing support from the volunteer co-ordinators. As our volunteers who help with our front line services come into contact with vulnerable people, it is our policy to take up references and arrange for a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check. We are sure you will understand the need for these sensible precautions.
To enable the Society to continue to grow we need help from the people of Hertfordshire.
If you can spare a little time to help with any of the above schemes, we would like to hear from you. Please contact our Sight-Line on 01707 324680 . Alternatively, you may prefer to complete and submit our On-Line Enquiry Form.
